Hanging Sleeve Instructions:

  • Quilt shows usually require a 4" minimum sleeve, which is achieved with a 9” wide strip of sleeve fabric. Use a 10” strip if you have the extra fabric - the quilt will hang better.
  • You can use any fabric for the quilt sleeve, from plain muslin to something complementary to the backing. Using the same fabric as the backing will make the sleeve almost invisible. If you use fabrics from your quilt, you’ll have some “spare parts” for future mending if needed.
  • It is easiest to add the sleeve just before you do the binding, but it’s not easily removable.
  • Wallhanging sleeves should be no less than 3” finished, depending on your preferred hanging rod.

Adding the Sleeve AFTER Binding the Quilt:

  1. Cut (or piece together) fabric to make a 9” strip the same width as the quilt.
  2. Fold under the two short edges by 1/4", wrong sides together. Fold under again. Press. Sew a straight or zigzag seam to hem the ends.
  3. Fold the strip lengthwise, wrong sides together, aligning the raw edges. Sew together with a 1/2" seam allowance. Press the seam allowance open.
  4. Placing the open seam down on the back of the quilt, center the top edge of the sleeve about 1/2" below the binding. PIN - lots! A large, flat, working surface is very helpful.
  5. Hand stitch the top edge to the quilt backing.
  6. Smooth the sleeve downward along the quilt back, then make a 1/2" fold along its length to create a pleat. Leaving the pleat intact, pin the sleeve bottom to the quilt. (If you’ve used a 10” wide fabric strip, you may prefer to leave the sleeve flatter.)
  7. Hand stitch the lower edge of the sleeve to the quilt. The sleeve will puff out a bit, which allows space for a hanging rod.
  8. Stitch down only the back sides of the sleeve to the quilt, leaving the pocket for the hanging rod.

Adding the Sleeve BEFORE the Binding:

  1. Prepare the sleeve as above with ends hemmed and folded lengthwise with wrong sides together and raw edges aligned.
  2. Center the folded strip along the top edge of the quilt, against the backing, aligning the raw edges with the unbound edge of the quilt.
  3. Baste the sleeve to the quilt within the seam allowance (approx. 1/8th inch).
  4. Bind the quilt as usual, starting on a side without the sleeve to help minimize bulk from extra layers of fabric.
  5. Finish with steps 6-8 above.

Don’t forget your label!
